Crayon and pastel drawings on the textured surfaces of old cloth-covered book covers. I love old books! It pains me to see them for sale for a few dollars and not having a good home to go to. When the books seem damaged or so obscure they are unlikely to be read, I will sometimes buy them for making art out of. The inner pages work well in collage for creating textured backgrounds in mixed media pieces, and the textured fabric covers make great canvases. They work especially well with crayon and oil pastel, as the weave provides a rough surface for the crayon to ‘hold onto’. I also like using the colour of the cover in negative space to form part of the image.
